Riga stories

Stories and legends are very often a great part of the city's history. Riga has a long and interesting one and the stories about it can be considered as a verity or just old wives' tales. It's up to you!

Is Riga complete? (Vai Riga ir gatava?)

This is the most favoured legend of Riga, which expresses the never ending chops and changes of the city.

The Big Christopher (Lielais Kristaps)

Here's another legend about Riga and its heroes. You may have heard about the wooden sculpture of The Big Christopher dedicated to this legend. You can find it right on the banks of Daugava River, next to the Old Town.

Domestic food production in the very centre of Riga

While visiting Riga you have a wonderful opportunity to purchase various kinds of local food production. The most favoured of course is the Riga Central Market, located just in 5 minutes' walk from Old Town.

The darksome corner of Stabu Street

Riga is a city which has experienced various generations and times, starting from heavy military marches of wartime to the joyful freedom dance. Unfortunately there are places which remind locals of those rough times during the Soviet Occupation. One of the most impressive is "The Corner House" on Stabu Street.

Languages spoken in Riga, Latvia

The official language in Latvia is Latvian (sometimes referred to as Lettish). It is an Indo-European language and is similar only to Lithuanian.
Widely spoken all over the country are also Russian, English and German.
