Did you know?
- Latvia, along with the neighbouring countries Estonia and Lithuania is known as the Baltic States. The concept of Baltic States as implying some sort of political unison among those three countries is untrue and therefore confusing.
- The longest river of Latvia is the Daugava, whereas its largest lake is Lake Lubana.
- In the 17th Century, Tobago, one of the two Caribbean islands comprising the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, was temporarily a colony of the Duchy of Courland which is now a part of Latvia.
- On the 23rd of August, 1989 more than two million people of all Baltic States joined their hands making the Baltic Way and demanded for their freedom. On that day the people of three Baltic States – Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, found out what it means to stand shoulder to shoulder, to stand against something and stand for something.
- There are over 800 Art Nouveau buildings found in the Riga city. So come up and enjoy that!
- Latvians are passionate mushroom pickers. Some would get up as early as 6:00 am to be the first in the woods and to get the best mushrooms. For some it's sport, for others it's a matter of survival. Nothing tastes better than home-made mushroom sauce.
- In the last several years the Riga Council has been working on the most expensive project ever - South Bridge. The construction costs about 600 million Lats (it's about 850 million Euro) and the bridge itself is less than 500 meters long. This is such a sore point for Riga residents, especially emphasized during the financial crisis.
- There are travellers visiting Riga who think that Maxima XXX is a popular sex shop. Please note, that Maxima XXX is a large department store, where you can find dairy products, vegetables, clothes and kid stuff.
- A lot of Latvians frequently finish their phone call using four languages at once. It sounds like this: "O.K. (English), Labi (Latvian), Davai (Russian), Ciao (Italian)!". Does it speak about the amount of nations they have been bounded with... or maybe it's just a very poliglotic nation?
- You can reach any place in Latvia by driving not more than 3 hours, unless you're trying to get from one side of Riga to another during a traffic jam!
